There are also suggestions that Willian would support the appointment of Sarri, who is viewed as an attacking coach.

Willian is another player who has grown unhappy under Conte and the winger is expected to ask to leave Chelsea if the former Juventus manager remains in his post.

But, despite interest from Manchester United, Willian would be prepared to stay at Stamford Bridge if Sarri came in.

Michael Ballack could be in line for a surprise return to Chelsea as their new director of football.

Standard Sport understands Ballack has been added to the list of names under consideration, which include another former Chelsea player, Juliano Belletti, and Lille’s sporting director Luis Campos.

Chelsea have not had a technical director since Michael Emenalo quit to join Monaco in November.

It was reported in December that Ballack had been asked to become a Chelsea ambassador but it is believed he is now in contention for a more senior role.

Club director Marina Granovskaia is owner Roman Abramovich’s most trusted aide and is Chelsea’s chief negotiator for transfers and player contracts.

Since Emenalo’s exit, Granovskaia has had an even bigger workload but the plan was always not to rush the search for a replacement and to intensify the search at the end of the campaign. Whoever lands the post will have to report to Granovskaia.

As Standard Sport wrote in January, Belletti is also in the frame. The 41-year-old Brazilian was initially being earmarked to bring in a new philosophy at the club alongside possible new manager Luis Enrique.

The latter was the strong favourite to replace Antonio Conte, who is expected to leave this summer, a few months ago but his wage demands have made Chelsea hesitate.

Antonio Conte is threatening to take a sabbatical if he is sacked by Chelsea this summer to maximise the club’s compensation bill.

The Italian coach is expecting to be dismissed despite winning the Premier League and FA Cup in two seasons at Stamford Bridge and is determined to receive the full payoff of £9 million, which was agreed as part of the new contract he signed with the club last summer.

Conte’s relationship with Chelsea has been fraught since the end of last season, but despite his unhappiness with several aspects of the club’s operations he has no intention of resigning. The 48-year-old effectively challenged Chelsea to sack him after Saturday’s FA Cup final 1-0 win over Manchester United, which would trigger a payout for the manager and his nine assistant coaches.

Under the terms of the improved contract that he signed last summer, if he is dismissed and does not take another job, Conte will continue to be paid his salary for 12 months, an option that he is actively considering, and it will take an extremely attractive offer to lure him back to the dugout in the short term.

Conte’s thinking is also likely to be influenced by the lack of vacancies at elite clubs this summer, while he also ruled himself out of returning to the Italian Football Federation, which appointed Roberto Mancini as the Italy head coach this month.

Manchester United are interested in signing Willian from Chelsea this summer, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News understands the Brazil midfielder wants to leave Stamford Bridge this summer if Antonio Conte remains as head coach.

Willian has two years remaining on his contract and, at this stage, there has been no formal offer from United.

Antonio Conte has dared Chelsea to sack him, saying that the club have failed to match his ambition and that he cannot change his managerial style or personality.

Chelsea are due to discuss his future in the next 48 hours and Conte is expected to be relieved of his duties after a season dominated by fights with the board over transfers ended before his team beat Manchester United to lift the FA Cup on Saturday. Conte is entitled to a salary of £9 million for the final year of his contract but is more likely to be paid weekly until he gets a new job. Leonardo Jardim, the Monaco coach, and Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona coach who is out of work, are his most likely successors.

Conte said that victory made no difference and he aimed a series of pot-shots at his employers for not backing him after he won the title in his first season in charge a year ago. He was annoyed that Chelsea did not sign Romelu Lukaku, who instead left Everton for United, and Alex Sandro, of Juventus, last summer.

“We spoke with the club and we tried to find the right way to try to defend our title, but as you know it’s not simple and sometimes you can have not always the same ambition,” Conte said. “It’s right for the club to take the best decision, but I don’t think the win [at Wembley] can change an assessment, an evaluation about my work.”

The Italian, who went to Milan to watch Andrea Pirlo’s testimonial today, described himself as a serial winner and suggested that Chelsea would sack him at their peril. He said that the club knew that he was predominantly a defensive coach when they signed him and they should have bought different players if they wanted to be more attacking.

Conte felt those contrasting philosophies led to his team conceding three or more goals on eight occasions this season. “When you decide to take a coach like me, you must know who you are taking, who you are charging for this job,” the manager said.

“I cannot change my personality. I cannot change my idea of football.

“A great team doesn’t concede three goals or four goals against Watford [Chelsea lost 4-1 in February]. We have to play strong defensively if you want to win a trophy or get a place in the Champions League. Today was the only way to lift a trophy . . . If you want to change, then we can change our idea, but you must change many players.”

Chelsea have explored managerial options for several months including Enrique, Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri, the Napoli head coach. The likelihood of Sarri’s availability increased last night when Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Napoli president, said that contract talks had broken down.

Conte’s avenues are less clear after he said that he had no interest in returning as Italy coach — before Roberto Mancini was named — while Paris Saint-Germain have appointed Thomas Tuchel.

Conte warned potential successors that they would have similar problems unless the club resolved the issues that he has faced. “The club has the right experience to understand which is the moment now and what the club has to do in the future to be competitive and to fight for a place in the Champions League,” he said. “I must be honest in this season the mountain to climb was very high but, despite this, we finished by lifting an important trophy.”
