Antonio Conte has dared Chelsea to sack him, saying that the club have failed to match his ambition and that he cannot change his managerial style or personality.

Chelsea are due to discuss his future in the next 48 hours and Conte is expected to be relieved of his duties after a season dominated by fights with the board over transfers ended before his team beat Manchester United to lift the FA Cup on Saturday. Conte is entitled to a salary of £9 million for the final year of his contract but is more likely to be paid weekly until he gets a new job. Leonardo Jardim, the Monaco coach, and Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona coach who is out of work, are his most likely successors.

Conte said that victory made no difference and he aimed a series of pot-shots at his employers for not backing him after he won the title in his first season in charge a year ago. He was annoyed that Chelsea did not sign Romelu Lukaku, who instead left Everton for United, and Alex Sandro, of Juventus, last summer.

“We spoke with the club and we tried to find the right way to try to defend our title, but as you know it’s not simple and sometimes you can have not always the same ambition,” Conte said. “It’s right for the club to take the best decision, but I don’t think the win [at Wembley] can change an assessment, an evaluation about my work.”

The Italian, who went to Milan to watch Andrea Pirlo’s testimonial today, described himself as a serial winner and suggested that Chelsea would sack him at their peril. He said that the club knew that he was predominantly a defensive coach when they signed him and they should have bought different players if they wanted to be more attacking.

Conte felt those contrasting philosophies led to his team conceding three or more goals on eight occasions this season. “When you decide to take a coach like me, you must know who you are taking, who you are charging for this job,” the manager said.

“I cannot change my personality. I cannot change my idea of football.

“A great team doesn’t concede three goals or four goals against Watford [Chelsea lost 4-1 in February]. We have to play strong defensively if you want to win a trophy or get a place in the Champions League. Today was the only way to lift a trophy . . . If you want to change, then we can change our idea, but you must change many players.”

Chelsea have explored managerial options for several months including Enrique, Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri, the Napoli head coach. The likelihood of Sarri’s availability increased last night when Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Napoli president, said that contract talks had broken down.

Conte’s avenues are less clear after he said that he had no interest in returning as Italy coach — before Roberto Mancini was named — while Paris Saint-Germain have appointed Thomas Tuchel.

Conte warned potential successors that they would have similar problems unless the club resolved the issues that he has faced. “The club has the right experience to understand which is the moment now and what the club has to do in the future to be competitive and to fight for a place in the Champions League,” he said. “I must be honest in this season the mountain to climb was very high but, despite this, we finished by lifting an important trophy.”
why are you frustrated? Chelsea have the best group of executives working in football and the results bear that fact out.
