Luis Enrique’s hopes of succeeding Antonio Conte at Chelsea could rest on whether or not he is prepared to accept a significantly lower wage than he was paid by Barcelona.

As previously reported by Telegraph Sport, Enrique, who speaks English, is keen on the prospect of joining Chelsea and would like to restart his managerial career in the Premier League.

But it is believed Enrique earned in the region of £16.5 million-a-year by the time he stood down from his Barça role at the end of last season, having won two La Liga titles, the Champions League and three Copa del Reys.

That is far in excess of the £9.5m-a-year wages Chelsea rewarded Conte with for winning the Premier League title last season and is even more than Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho earn at Manchester City and Manchester United.

Enrique’s wage demands, therefore, could provide a stumbling block over a proposed move to Stamford Bridge and offer hope to Thomas Tuchel, the former Borussia Dortmund manager, and Maurizio Sarri of Napoli, who are both interested in the Chelsea job and would be much cheaper.

Chelsea are expected to reschedule contract talks with keeper Thibaut Courtois until after their key games against Barcelona and Leicester in March.

Courtois revealed three weeks ago that more negotiations were going to take place in February, but with just one day of the month remaining, it is understood that hasn't been the case.

The Belgium international's current deal has just over one year left to run, yet Chelsea have already intimated that they will pay him in excess of £200,000-a-week for him to sign an extension.

Chelsea are under pressure to finalise terms with Real Madrid monitoring the situation in view of making a bid in the summer.

But it is believed both Chelsea and Courtois agree that the timing isn't right with so much at stake in the next few weeks.

N’Golo Kante suffered a frightening health scare ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League defeat to Manchester City as he fainted at the club’s training ground.

Telegraph Sport understands shocked team-mates were terrified Kante had suffered a heart problem when he momentarily passed out in front of them after training last Friday – just two days before Chelsea were due to face City.

Even though Kante was not found to have any heart issue and travelled with the rest of the squad to the Etihad, the scare was brought into sharp focus, as head coach Antonio Conte, his staff and the Chelsea players then learned of the tragic death of Davide Astori on the morning of the City game.

A Chelsea doctor arrived on the scene within seconds after Kante slumped to one side in the dressing room at the club’s Cobham training ground after Friday’s session.

Having regained consciousness and been attended to on site, Kante was sent to a specialist for a series of cardiology tests, which, fortunately, all came back clear.

Having found no heart problems or other issues, the specialist report cleared Kante to play for Chelsea against City but the 26-year-old felt unwell on Sunday morning and it was decided to take no risks. No specific reason was given by the specialist as to why Kante would have fainted, but it has been suggested that last week’s freezing temperatures may have been a contributing factor.

Having sat out the City game, Kante was back in at Cobham on Monday and completed a training session without suffering any problems. Barring any fresh injury, he is expected to be available for Saturday’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace and next week’s Champions League last-16 clash against Barcelona.

Chelsea players are worried that head coach Antonio Conte could push Eden Hazard towards the Stamford Bridge exit door with his safety-first tactics.

The Blues are prepared to pay Hazard over £300,000-a-week to extend his contract past 2020 and ignore interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City.

But team-mates of Hazard fear he is becoming exasperated with being asked to play in the false nine position in Chelsea’s biggest games and believe he wants to play for a club that will go toe-to-toe against Europe’s best.

Although Conte is expected to leave Chelsea at the end of the season, there is genuine concern that the Italian’s approach will force Hazard to consider whether or not the Blues can match his ambitions. Chelsea had promised Hazard that he would be given the platform to one day win the Ballon d’Or at the club, but his performances in the biggest games are being stifled.

The Blues have vowed to reject any offer from City for Hazard – even if the Premier League leaders offer to break the world record fee of £200million - but realise they would struggle to stand in the way of a switch to Real if he decides he wants to go.

Having already admitted that he would have preferred to play in his favoured left-sided position against Barcelona, Hazard could not hide his frustration at being made to play through the middle in the City game.

Chelsea have suffered a major blow with the news that David Luiz is going to be ruled out for another month with knee and ankle injuries.

Luiz now faces a struggle to get match fit and back in the side before the end of the campaign.

The 30-year-old has been suffering with a knee injury for over a year after being on the receiving end of a reckless Sergio Aguero tackle during Chelsea's win at Manchester City in December 2016.

Standard Sport understands that he has travelled to see a specialist for treatment in Barcelona on more than one occasion this season, but problems still persist.

"The tactics were the same against Barcelona [in the Champions League]," Conte said. "Defensively, we were very good in both games. If you look at the stats, we conceded only two shots to Manchester City: one they scored, and another after a free kick and [Cesar Azpilicueta] saved it on the line.

"I didn't see a lot of shots on goal from Manchester City, and this is very strange. Usually when you play against Manchester City they shoot about 20 or 25 times every game. For sure, compare that with the Barcelona game, I think we were not so good in ball possession. We missed a lot of last passes.

"For sure, we have to improve. We have to improve in personality, especially when there is a lot of pressure from our opponent. But the tactics were the same against Barcelona and, against Barcelona, I didn't [hear] anyone complaining.

"If I think it's right for the team to play in this way, it's okay. Otherwise I can take another decision and play with a striker. I can take different decisions. There are three players for two places. One has to go on the bench. Then I have to decide who has to go on the bench."

Chelsea are facing Barcelona this week in the second leg of their Champions League tie, and that means wall to wall coverage in the Spanish sport media.

There’s a great deal of excitement which is added to because of the built up rivalry between Chelsea and their Catalan opponents.

Antonio Conte’s situation at Stamford Bridge is also the subject of several columns, including one from Marca on Tuesday which details a mess at Chelsea.

In a ‘confidencial’ section, so implying they have inside information, Marca state everything started to go wrong with the handling of Diego Costa.

For Conte, ‘the estrangement with Roman Abramovich was total’ and when that starts to happen there’s usually only one outcome.

Players have been unhappy since, with continual leaks to the media (often in Brazil), and the Spanish newspaper believe Chelsea are something of a rudderless ship at the moment.

It’s even stated the exit of Michael Emenalo has left the club ‘orphaned’ in respect of sorting out day to day issues, with Marina Granovskaia uninterested in the day to day running.

Luis Enrique is once again named as the man likeliest to take over from Conte, something which is now being reported repeatedly in Spain.
